BIG BASH: Black Coffee Foundation throws a glittering birthday bash for the DJ

By Sitha Maliwa

The Black Coffee Foundation threw an extraordinary black-tie gala dinner in Johannesburg to commemorate the birthday of internationally renowned DJ, Black Coffee. The event transformed into a celebration not only of life but also of purpose, marking the launch of The Black Coffee Music Academy, an initiative designed to empower aspiring musicians across Africa.

Held at the elegant LUXX Venue Sandhurst, the gala attracted an impressive roster of guests, including prominent figures like Fikile Mbalula, Major League DJz, Oskido, Anatii, Blxckie, and former Miss South Africa, Dr. Tamaryn Green. Hosted by the charismatic Anele Mdoda, the evening featured a curated three-course meal by the talented Chef Scott and captivating performances from various artists, including Zandile Mzazi and Nduduzo Makhathini.

One standout moment was a live auction facilitated by Strauss & Co. that featured exclusive items such as a signature artwork by Nelson Makamo and a limited-edition Rolex watch. The auction, along with online pledges, helped the Black Coffee Foundation exceed its fundraising goal, raising an astonishing R3.1 million. This significant amount will go directly toward creating The Black Coffee Music Academy, which seeks to provide world-class music education to young African musicians.

Lungie Maphumulo, CEO of the Black Coffee Foundation, expressed her enthusiasm about the evening’s success. “Raising R3.1 million means we can take the first steps in physically building the foundation of the Academy,” she shared. “This initiative is deeply personal to us because it allows us to enrich the lives of young musicians who dream of becoming the next Black Coffee.”

Black Coffee himself took a moment to reflect on the journey that led to the Academy’s inception. “This initiative has been a dream of mine for a long time,” he said. “I’ve always been committed to leaving the world a better place, and this Academy is part of that vision. By investing in young minds, we are securing the future of our music and culture.”

The Black Coffee Foundation’s mission continues beyond this celebratory night, with fundraising efforts aimed at building The Black Coffee Music Academy ongoing. Through this initiative, the foundation aims to redefine African music on a global scale, ensuring that the rich tapestry of the continent’s musical heritage continues to thrive and evolve. – @SANews
