BOOK REVIEW: Dr Babs Tells More Than a Real-Life Story, But Challenges Women to Redefine Their Lives

By Katlego Rammusa: In the book The After-40 Dilemma: Balancing Life, Love, and Purpose, Babalwa Maholwana (Dr Babs) pulls back the curtain on a demographic often expected to have it all figured out: the high-achieving woman in her prime. What follows is a raw, sophisticated, and deeply relatable narrative that reframes the "midlife crisis" as a profound midlife transition. Published by Mbokodo Publishers, this work serves as both a memoir and a survival guide for women navigating the high-stakes intersection of professional excellence and personal upheaval. The Collision of Two Worlds Dr. Babs is the quintessential protagonist for the modern era—a qualified medical doctor with a thriving executive career in the pharmaceutical ind...

Sibikwa Arts Centre Opens Call for Participation for Inclusive Dance and Communications Training Programmes

By The Buz Hive: Young performers doing the dance at Sibikwa Arts Centre. (Image: Sibikwa website) Sibikwa Arts Centre is calling for applications to two complementary training programmes designed to strengthen South Africa’s inclusive arts ecosystem, supporting both dancers with disabilities and the cultural practitioners who shape how their work is shared with the world. Running from August to November 2026 and supported through National Arts Council (NAC) bursaries, the programmes respond to a clear gap in the sector: while artists with disabilities continue to face limited access to professional development opportunities, many arts managers, organisers, and media practitioners remain under-equipped to communicate inclusive work in w...

Word of the Week: Flourish

By Sello Hatang: In honour of International Day of the Boy Child, our word of the week is Flourish. The theme, “Flourish and Thrive: Investing in Boys for Stronger Families and Communities,” invites us to reflect deeply on the place of the boy child in our homes, schools, churches, communities and society. It reminds us that boys are not born merely to survive. They are born to grow, to belong, to be guided, to be corrected, to be affirmed, and to become men of character, compassion and courage. To flourish is more than to succeed. It is more than passing exams, winning trophies, earning applause or appearing strong in public. To flourish is to grow fully as a human being. It is to be rooted in love, watered by guidance, strengthened by ...

COCKTAILS, CHEMISTS & CHAOS: The moisturised robot that ruled the night

By Zee: If there is one thing Johannesburg’s beauty people love more than a serum with three active ingredients nobody can pronounce, it is a launch event with soft lighting, free alcohol and the possibility of spotting a celebrity pretending they are not exhausted. And darling, the launch gala for Skin Certified SA delivered exactly that. Hosted at Level Three in Kramerville, the evening introduced South Africa’s first dermatologist-governed certification standard for skincare creators and brands, which is honestly overdue because some of you have been taking skincare advice from people whose only qualification is having a ring light and confidence. The initiative, backed by the Dermatology Society of South Africa (DSSA) and supported b...

The Undocumented Immigrants: The South African Migraine

By Nelvis Qekema: Because the advent of the nation-state was imposed on Africa by colonialism and imperialism, a misanalysis is often committed to the effect that the Continent would otherwise never have had nations and social classes. It is outrageously ahistorical to think that Africa would have been immune to the laws of historical development and forever remain in the stage of communalism. It is a dangerous assumption to think Africa would forever be trapped at the level of social formations like clans and tribes with their archaic pastoral and nomadic level of development. This is not to exonerate colonialism and imperialism from the damage and scars it inflicted on the African people(s) and African land. The result was colonial demarcation...

Celebrating Motswako: Katlego Rammusa’s Literary Tribute Resonates at UJ

By Thobile Jiwulane: Katlego Rammusa — author, music enthusiast, and proud son of Mafikeng — was showered with words of appreciation at the University of Johannesburg Library, where he discussed his acclaimed book 'Motswako: The Beginnings'. The event formed part of UJ’s Africa Month celebrations, designed to advance critical dialogue through literature, culture, and scholarship. The conversation was facilitated by a knowledgeable host, Thapelo Khambule, a UJ Library researcher, who guided the audience through Rammusa’s journey with warmth and insight. For Katlego, speaking about Motswako is second nature. The genre was born in his community, Maftown, and he was part of the movement that grew from its dusty streets. He recalled how a casual con...

10TH MAY REMEMBERED: FROM NGQEBERHA 1891 TO MANDELA 1994

By Fumene George Tsibani: Figure 1: The Hierarchy of the Royal House of Nkosiyamntu. (Source: Tsibani 2020, Chapter 6) PURPOSE This paper examines the continuum of Royal Monarchy resistance of AmaXhosa Omthonyama by linking two acts of remembrance: the launch of the Imbumba yamaNyama Congress in Ngqeberha on 10 May 1891 by Dr Mpilo Walter Benson Rubusana kaCirha, and the inauguration of President Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela on 10 May 1994. It interrogates how colonial and apartheid administrations distorted pre-colonial genealogies and governance hierarchies, thereby fracturing the constitutional order of the Royal House of King Nkosiyamntu.
