CENTLEC HEADACHE: R1.5m waste, R2.5m needed as cable theft rises in the Mangaung Metro

By Becker Semela: Recovered cables (Image: Supplied) The power utility in Mangaung Metro Municipality, CENTLEC, is facing a serious crisis with growing cable theft cases in the Mangaung area, especially the stealing of aerial service connection cables, commonly known as airdacs. This problem continues to disrupt the electricity supply and cost the power utility millions of rands to repair and replace the damaged or stolen infrastructure unnecessarily. According to CENTLEC acting spokesperson, Tseliso Leba, around 800 cable theft cases were reported in the past financial year, with many more going unreported or being mistaken for power faults. He said the theft has forced the utility to spend R1.5m just to replace the stolen cables. RAPIST JAILED: Mamelodi rapist sentenced to life and 491 years direct imprisonment

News SA: Mother of one of the victims welcoming the sentence (Video: NPA) A sentence of life and 491 years' direct imprisonment was handed down by Judge Mashudu Munzhelele in the Pretoria High Court to Doctor Nkurube today 21 May to serial rapist Doctor Nkurube Maruma. Maruma (34), who is from Mamelodi, was charged with a series of heinous sexual offences and violent crimes. He was charged for rape, house breaking and theft, among other charges. The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently with the life imprisonment term, and Maruma was declared unfit to possess a firearm. MAGUDUMANE APPEAL DENIED: NPA welcomes dismissal of Magudumana’s deportation appeal

By Mpumzi Mshweshwe: Dr Nandipha Magudumane (Image: by X) The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed today’s judgment of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA), which dismissed a deportation appeal by Dr Nandipha Magudumana. Magudumane claimed that her deportation from Tanzania was unlawful and that the police had abducted her. Magudumane appealed to the SCA, hoping for a different conclusion after Judge Phillip Loubser at the High Court in Bloemfontein ruled in June 2023 that her arrest was not unlawful. The SCA yesterday denied her appeal. Magudumana and her co-accused are facing a total of 38 counts ranging from fraud, corruption, money laundering, assisting an inmate to escape, violation of the body, arson, and defeating the ends of justice. FIGHT AGAINST GBVF: Charges against mother who killed her daughter’s rapist dropped by NPA

The mother was arrested after she killed the man on 5 April 2025, this year and her charges were dropped today, the 5th of May. The case was heard today, 5 May 2025, at the Lady Frere Magistrate’s Court in the Emalahleni Local Municipality. POACHERS ARRESTED: Rhino poacher sentenced to 20 years with partner still at large

Nelson Sandile Sambo (43) was convicted on seven counts.  The counts were trespassing, killing a rhino, possession of a firearm to commit a crime, possession of a firearm, ammunition and a dangerous weapon.
