South Africa’s rich cultural heritage, powerful musical legacy and enduring spirit of unity will command the world’s attention on 18 July 2026 when Trafalgar Square in London is transformed into a spectacular celebration of Nelson Mandela Day.
In a landmark event commemorating Nelson Mandela Day and the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s Constitution, some of the country’s most celebrated artists will perform on one of the world’s most recognised public stages. Headlining the concert are Sjava, Jesse Clegg, Msaki, Sun El Musician, Thakzin and the legendary Sipho Mchunu, with additional artists expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
More than a concert, the event is a powerful celebration of South Africa’s democratic journey, cultural diversity and global influence. It will unfold in Trafalgar Square, a place forever woven into South Africa’s struggle for freedom. During the darkest years of apartheid, the square became a focal point for international solidarity, while Nelson Mandela himself addressed thousands there following his release from prison. On Nelson Mandela Day, history will once again come alive as South African music fills the same space that once echoed with calls for justice and equality.
Central to the celebration is Scatterlings, a cultural movement inspired by the iconic song Scatterlings of Africa, created by Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu. The initiative celebrates connection, belonging and the shared experiences that unite people across cultures and generations. It reflects the enduring belief that music has the power to bridge divides, inspire hope and bring communities together.
Jesse Clegg and Msaki, founding voices behind Scatterlings, will be joined by Sipho Mchunu of Juluka fame to carry that timeless message to a new generation. Their collaboration pays tribute to South Africa’s remarkable musical history while embracing a future built on unity, creativity and cultural exchange.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie described the occasion as far more than an entertainment event.
“This is a love letter to South Africa and to every South African who has ever carried their identity far from home. On 18 July, at Trafalgar Square, we are not just celebrating Mandela’s legacy. We are living it.”
Jesse Clegg echoed that sentiment, saying the project embodies the values that continue to define South Africa.
“Scatterlings is about connection between people, cultures and generations. To bring this music and message to Trafalgar Square on Nelson Mandela Day is incredibly meaningful and a chance to celebrate South Africa with the world.”
The London concert will serve as the opening chapter of an even bigger cultural celebration. Just two weeks later, on 1 August 2026, the inaugural Scatterlings Music Festival will take place at Huddle Park in Johannesburg, bringing the same spirit of unity back to South African soil. The festival will feature an outstanding line-up including Zakes Bantwini, Sjava, Msaki, Sun El Musician, Jesse Clegg, Sminofu, J’Something, Jabulile Majola, MUZI, Simmy & Kenza and TRESOR, showcasing the depth and diversity of South Africa’s contemporary music scene.
Together, the London concert and Johannesburg festival represent more than performances on a stage. They are a celebration of a nation whose story has inspired the world through resilience, reconciliation and hope. They honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela by demonstrating that South Africa continues to lead not only through its history, but also through its creativity, innovation and cultural excellence.
