Johannesburg – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) recently announced the nominees for the highly anticipated Metro FM Music Awards 2025 during an event that took place at The Galleria in Kramerville, Sandton.
The occasion featured captivating performances that included Usimamane, Mawelele, Naledi and Lwa Ndlunkulu. Metro FM host Lerato Kganyago took charge as the DJ at the turntable, adding an electrifying atmosphere to the evening.
Set against the backdrop of an ever-evolving music landscape, this year’s nominations recognies exceptional singles and albums released between 28 February 2024 and 28 February 2025.
According to Mmoni Ngubane , head of communications at SABC, this edition of the Metro FM Music Awards has achieved a remarkable milestone, receiving 2,769 entries across 19 categories, marking a significant increase from last year’s 1,700 entries.
“The awards continue to highlight the vibrancy of the South African music scene,” she said.
Amapiano, the genre that has captivated audiences worldwide, has emerged at the forefront this year. Legends like Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa, and Scotts Maphuma dominate the nominations, each clinching four nominations. Following closely behind, iNkabi Nation’s Sjava has three nominations, alongside hip-hop stalwarts Kwesta and Cassper Nyovest.
The theme for this year’s awards, “Crowning Greatness,” embodies the essence of the evening – a celebration of those who have significantly shaped South Africa’s cultural narrative. It not only honors artists’ achievements but marks a day of coronation, where musicians are recognized as cultural icons, etching their contributions into the annals of history.
The Metro FM Music Awards 2025 is scheduled for Saturday, 03 May 2025, at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga and will be broadcast live on SABC1. The evening promises to be more than just an awards ceremony; it’s an extravagant tribute to the richness of South African music culture.
Adding to the excitement, the Motsepe Foundation proudly sponsors the event, offering cash prizes of R50,000 to each category winner, with a grand prize for the Song of the Year. This initiative aims to provide even more value to the awards, affirming the legacy of the artists honored.
