FROM CORNER STORE TO COASTLINE: Township families finally get a taste of resort life

By Sitha Maliwa:

For generations, resort holidays and hotel stays in South Africa have been whispered dreams in township households – fantasies reserved for the rich and unreachable. Luxury destinations? Not for the people of Soweto, Alexandra, or Katlehong. Until now.

A groundbreaking travel pilot is erupting in the very heart of South Africa’s townships – flipping the narrative, smashing down barriers, and boldly declaring: you deserve this too.

Launched by Dream Hotels & Resorts in partnership with TUU Post, a township tech franchise that transforms everyday local stores into digital service powerhouses, the initiative is rewriting the rules of who gets to travel – and how.

From just five TUU Post stores – three in Soweto, one in Alexandra and one in Katlehong – dreams are being plotted, deposits are being skipped, and holidays are being booked. No credit card? No problem. No massive upfront payment? Also fine. These holidays are built around real-life township budgets.

“We’ve created a model that allows South Africans in every corner of the country to enjoy their own land in the style and comfort synonymous with a Dream Hotels & Resorts experience,” says Clyde Keevy, head of leisure sales at Dream Hotels & Resorts. “Residents can walk into a local business and book a getaway without needing a credit card, long-term contract, or a big upfront deposit, which makes all the difference for households managing tight budgets.”

The travel revolution will be stokvelled

This isn’t just about cheap holidays. It’s about travel that makes sense for township communities – powered by stokvels, lay-bys, and pay-as-you-go magic.

The foundation is Dream Escapes, a month-to-month vacation product that throws outdated contracts in the bin. Township travellers can now build their holidays, credit by credit – whether they’re flying solo, travelling as a family, or booking as a stokvel group.

“This market knows how to plan and save but just hasn’t had the right resources or trusted channels to book holidays,” Keevy explains.

And let’s not forget the more than R50 billion circulating in stokvels each year. That’s not small change. That’s power. That’s potential.

Enter: The corner store travel agent

In a plot twist no one saw coming, your local spaza owner might now be your new travel agent. The pilot empowers store owners to act as micro-agents, earning commission and helping their community access holiday bookings right from behind the counter.

This is entrepreneurship. This is grassroots tourism. And this is how an industry that once locked out millions is learning to speak township.

Blue Marlin’s big splash

One resort is already rolling out the red carpet for this new wave of travellers: the Blue Marlin All Inclusive Seascape in KwaZulu-Natal. Known and loved for decades, it’s been reborn as a haven for first-time explorers seeking all-in-one simplicity: meals, activities, and accommodation – no financial curveballs.

“This flexible system, developed in collaboration with LayUp, allows guests to secure holidays through smaller, interest-free instalments, serving as another step in removing financial barriers to travel.”

The lay-by-style model being trialled at Blue Marlin isn’t just convenient  – it’s revolutionary. It meets families where they are: planning, saving, dreaming.

The bigger picture

Vacation ownership in South Africa is thriving, with an average occupancy of 79%, outpacing many traditional hotel models. And Dream Hotels & Resorts isn’t just watching the trend  – they’re shaping it.

“Our work now lies in gently educating first-time travellers about how the system works, offering flexible payment options like PayFlex, EFT and now LayUp, and building their trust in an industry that has long felt inaccessible,” Keevy adds. “There’s no reason why a young family in Soweto or a Katlehong-based stokvel shouldn’t be able to book weekend getaways with the same ease and joy as a tourist from Germany or Joburg North.”

This isn’t just a travel pilot. It’s a movement. A spark. A revolution in slippers and suitcases.
