FROM TALK TO  ACTION: The 2025 Green Economy Indaba sparks change

By Sitha Maliwa:

The air at the 2025 Nedbank Green Economy Indaba crackled with urgency and hope. Business leaders, young entrepreneurs, and changemakers converged under one roof, not just to talk about sustainability but to declare a new chapter in South Africa’s fight for an inclusive, resilient, and greener future.

This was no ordinary conference. It was a battle cry. A rallying point. A space where South Africa’s youth stood tall, proving they are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but the architects of today’s solutions.

From renewable energy to sustainable farming, from water innovation to green financing, the conversations were fierce, unapologetic, and inspiring. Panels unpacked the Just Transition Framework, probing how inclusivity can be more than a policy promise – but a lived reality that creates wealth, dignity, and opportunities for communities too long left behind.

What made this indaba unforgettable were the stories of youth-led innovation blazing across the stage. Kusini Water, bringing safe water to underserved communities. FURTHER, pushing the boundaries of eco-innovation. Avo Vision and the ReNew Programme, proving that entrepreneurship can be both profitable and planet-saving. These weren’t case studies. They were living testaments to possibility – and a challenge to the room: follow their lead or be left behind.

The climax came with the Green Economy Awards, where the spotlight shone on South Africa’s boldest young innovators. Categories like Green SMME Trailblazer and Youth Green Innovation didn’t just hand out trophies – they unleashed futures. Winners walked away not only with recognition but with seed funding and incubation support, the very fuel needed to turn sparks of brilliance into raging fires of change.

“More than a gathering, this indaba shows what happens when young innovators, business leaders, and communities unite with a shared purpose,” declared Poovi Pillay, Nedbank’s Executive Head of Social Impact. “Our youth are not waiting for tomorrow. They are changing the game today.”

The day closed not with speeches, but with a collective understanding: the green economy is not a dream. It is here. It is now. And it is being driven by South Africa’s youth, whose creativity, resilience, and determination refuse to bow to despair. – @NewsSA_Online
