A decade ago, the Rustenburg Community Development Trust (RCDT) was founded on a bold vision to transform mining-linked communities into self-sustaining powerhouses of innovation, skills, and enterprise. Today, that vision stands tall. As RCDT prepares to host its 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 27 November at the RCDT Hub in Paardekraal, the organisation marks 10 years of transformative community impact that has reshaped lives across Rustenburg’s 65 villages.
This is no ordinary AGM. It’s a celebration of progress, resilience, and a renewed promise to build a Rustenburg that thrives beyond the mines. From humble beginnings in 2014 to a thriving network that has reached over 50,000 beneficiaries, RCDT’s journey reads like a blueprint for sustainable development in South Africa’s mining heartland.
Over the past financial year alone, RCDT has rolled out 15 high-impact programmes spanning skills training, entrepreneurship, infrastructure development, and agriculture. The Trust’s mission has always been clear – to empower people with tools to shape their own destinies. And the results speak for themselves: young entrepreneurs taking root, families gaining financial stability, and communities uniting around shared growth.
“This AGM is more than a reflection – it’s a launchpad for the next decade of empowerment,” said Chairperson Thabo Makama, his voice echoing the pride of a decade-long journey. “We’re proud of our community-led approach that has turned visions into realities. Our focus on self-determination ensures that Rustenburg’s residents drive their own progress, creating lasting change beyond the mines.”
While many community initiatives struggle to stay afloat, RCDT has managed to thrive. The Trust recorded a 25% increase in funding in the past year, thanks to strong governance and visionary partnerships. Finance Manager Siya Nkosi credits this success to transparency and accountability:
“Our financial growth reflects the unwavering trust of our partners. This allows us to invest boldly in agriculture, manufacturing, and other sectors that build long-term prosperity. Every rand is a seed planted for future generations.”
This year’s AGM will also usher in a new generation of community board members, bringing fresh energy and ideas to the Trust’s leadership. “The inclusion of new trustees from our communities marks a new chapter in participatory governance,” Makama added. “We are building a Rustenburg where decisions are made by the people, for the people.”
Looking ahead, RCDT’s strategic priorities are ambitious yet grounded: Mining, Beyond Mining, Agriculture, Manufacturing, and Economic Development. These five pillars are designed to propel Rustenburg from dependency to dynamism – where locals are not just consumers but creators of value.
Operations Manager Katleho Thinane summed it up perfectly: “In 2024/25, we’ve seen ordinary citizens become extraordinary changemakers. Across 65 villages, entrepreneurs have emerged, families have stabilised, and communities have united. This is the power of partnerships – sustainable impact that resonates at the grassroots.”
RCDT’s success has become a model for other mining regions seeking sustainable transition. By focusing on skills, adaptability, and self-determination, the Trust has proven that real development happens when communities take the driver’s seat.
