Africa’s story is often told through the lens of struggle, resilience, and reinvention. Yet within this vast narrative are individuals whose lives embody the continent’s determination to define its own voice.
Joshua Oludare Olusan is one such figure — a media professional, cultural advocate, and founder of The African Portal, whose journey reflects both personal perseverance and a commitment to building Africa’s narrative on the global stage.
Joshua Oludare Olusan was born in Ibadan, Nigeria, and comes from Ogun State in the town of Ijebu–Igbo. He is the first son in a family of six children. Olusan grew up in a Christian home where his father served as a pastor. Because of this, the church played an important role in his life from a young age.
Therefore, it became inevitable that while growing up, to be very active in church activities. Serving as a choir master got him noticed, and that helped him to develop strong leadership and communication skills. These early experiences helped shape the person he would later become – building his confidence and a passion for speaking, leadership and helping others.
Education and career in media and advertising
He demonstrated keenness to pursue education at all cost and this was demonstrated by his quest to study and succeed. Olusan started his schooling at St John’s Catholic School in Ibadan in 1985 before attending Ibadan City Academy in 1991. As he grew older, he continued to work hard on his education.
In 1998, he attended extramural classes at the University of Ibadan. He later studied at The Polytechnic, Ibadan in 2000. His desire to learn did not stop there because in 2011, he furthered his studies through the University of South Africa (UNISA). In 2016, he also studied journalism at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. These studies helped him develop knowledge and skills in media, communication and journalism. – @NewsSA_Online
