KEEPING BABY HEALTHY: Simple hygiene habits every parent should know

By Sitha Maliwa :

For many new parents, keeping a baby clean is often associated with bath time. However, everyday hygiene routines play a far greater role in protecting babies from illness. From washing hands before feeding to trimming tiny nails and cleaning feeding equipment, small daily habits can significantly reduce a baby’s exposure to harmful germs while their immune systems are still developing.

According to independent midwife Sr Londe, who advises Vital Baby South Africa, babies are naturally more vulnerable to infections because their immune systems are still maturing. For this reason, maintaining simple and consistent hygiene practices is essential for keeping babies comfortable, healthy and protected.

“Babies are naturally more vulnerable to germs because their immune systems are still developing,” she explains. “The good news is that small, consistent hygiene practices can greatly reduce the risk of common illnesses.”

Handwashing: The first line of defence

Handwashing remains one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water before feeding a baby, after changing nappies, after using the bathroom, after handling pets and after returning home from outings.

Hands collect germs throughout the day from everyday activities such as touching surfaces, phones or door handles. Washing hands before handling a baby helps prevent these germs from being passed on.

As babies grow into toddlers, parents can also begin teaching them simple handwashing habits before meals and after playtime. Establishing these routines early helps children develop lifelong hygiene habits. When soap and water are not available, gentle baby-safe wipes can also be useful for cleaning little hands and faces while travelling.

Nail care: Small but Important

Although they may seem tiny, baby nails grow surprisingly quickly and can easily collect dirt or bacteria. Babies also tend to touch their faces frequently, which means long nails can lead to scratches that may become irritated or infected.

Regular nail trimming is therefore an important part of baby hygiene. Many parents find it easiest to trim a baby’s nails after bath time when the nails are softer.

Using grooming tools designed specifically for babies can also make the process safer and less stressful. With the right tools and a calm moment during the day, nail care quickly becomes part of a normal parenting routine.

Nasal care: Helping baby breathe comfortably

Blocked noses are common among babies, particularly during colder months or seasonal changes. Because infants rely heavily on breathing through their noses, congestion can interfere with feeding and sleep.

Gentle nasal care can help relieve this discomfort. Saline drops combined with baby-friendly nasal aspirators can help clear blocked nasal passages safely and allow babies to breathe more easily.

Parents are also encouraged to keep their baby’s sleeping environment well ventilated and free from irritants such as cigarette smoke, dust or strong fragrances, which may worsen congestion.

Preventing common infections

While it is impossible to completely eliminate exposure to germs, parents can reduce the risk of infection through a few practical steps.

Keeping toys and teethers clean is important because babies explore the world by putting objects into their mouths. Toys and teething items should be washed regularly with warm, soapy water and allowed to dry properly before being used again.

Safe feeding hygiene is equally important. Whether a baby is breastfed or bottle-fed, feeding equipment such as bottles and teats should be properly sterilised. The prepared formula should be stored according to recommended guidelines, and unfinished milk should be discarded after feeding to prevent bacterial growth.

Household surfaces also play a role in hygiene. Changing tables, highchairs and kitchen counters should be cleaned regularly using baby-safe cleaning products to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

During flu season or when respiratory infections are circulating, parents may also consider limiting a baby’s exposure to people who are unwell. Encouraging visitors to wash their hands before holding a baby can also help prevent the spread of germs.

Building Healthy Habits from the Start

Maintaining good baby hygiene does not need to be complicated. By focusing on simple routines such as handwashing, regular grooming, clean feeding practices and sanitised toys, parents can significantly reduce the risk of common infections.

Having the right baby care products on hand can also make these routines easier to manage. Dedicated nail care sets, baby-safe wipes and grooming kits help parents handle everyday hygiene tasks with greater confidence.

Vital Baby, a family-run business with more than 45 years of experience in the baby care industry, aims to support parents with practical solutions that make daily routines simpler. Its product range includes feeding, hygiene and soothing products designed to support babies through different developmental stages. As Sr Londe emphasises, parenting involves constant learning, but when it comes to baby hygiene, the basics are often the most effective. “Small everyday habits help protect babies while giving parents confidence that they are doing the very best for their little ones.”- @NewsSA_Online
