In the shadow of the first-ever LIV Golf South Africa, a group of local legends turned mentors for a day, giving young golfers from Diepsloot a chance to step into the spotlight.
Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Dean Burmester, and Branden Grace hosted an unforgettable youth clinic at Steyn City today, showing the next generation that dreams can start on the putting green.
Children aged 9 to 11 were treated to a masterclass in golf fundamentals, from grip and alignment to putting techniques, guided by South Africa’s most celebrated professionals.
Beyond instruction, the session was a lively celebration of skill, fun, and friendly competition – a chance for the youngsters to rub shoulders with champions they’ve only seen on television.
The clinic is part of the Southern Guards GC Academy Development Programme, a 12-month initiative created in partnership with LIV Golf, the Steyn City Foundation, and Element Golf Academy.
Forty learners from Diepsloot primary schools benefit from structured coaching, mentorship, life-skills development, and personal growth – a holistic programme designed to nurture talent and build character.
Petrie Cronje, General Manager of the Southern Guards GC Foundation, emphasized the clinic’s wider significance.

“Today isn’t just about golf. It’s about creating moments that inspire young people, connecting them with role models, and showing them that opportunities in sport and life are possible when talent is supported with belief and guidance.”
The players themselves reinforced that vision. Oosthuizen, speaking as team captain, said: “Days like this are really special.
We were once kids with big dreams too. Spending time with these youngsters and showing them the game means a lot.
If even one walks away believing they can achieve something through golf, then it’s been worth it.”
The clinic also forms a critical part of the legacy strategy tied to LIV Golf South Africa, ensuring that the international tournament leaves more than trophies in its wake – it leaves hope, inspiration, and opportunity for communities that rarely get a chance to engage with the sport.
As the tournament prepares to tee off from 19-22 March, the Southern Guards GC youth clinic has already created one of LIV Golf South Africa’s most memorable moments: a day when future champions met their idols, and dreams took flight on the greens of Steyn City.– @NewsSA_Online
