Free State MEC Makume Escapes Injury in N5 Crash

By Rorisang Rampheteng::

Bloemfontein — The Free State Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDT) has confirmed that MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Ketso Makume, was involved in a motor vehicle accident on Sunday, 19 April 2026.

According to an official media statement issued by the department, the incident occurred along the N5 between Paul Roux and Senekal. The accident reportedly happened when a wild animal suddenly crossed the road, leaving the driver with little time to react and avoid a collision.

Despite the seriousness often associated with such crashes, the department expressed relief that Makume and his two protectors escaped without sustaining any serious injuries.

Department spokesperson Mojalefa Mphapang said, “We are relieved to report that the MEC and both his protectors escaped without sustaining any serious injuries. While we acknowledge that this news may cause concern, we respectfully request that the MEC, his protectors, and their families be afforded the necessary space and privacy to recover.”

Authorities have not indicated any further complications arising from the crash, and no other vehicles were reported to have been involved.

The department further noted that Makume is in a stable condition and is expected to resume his official duties once fully recovered.

Motorists travelling along rural routes in the Free State, particularly on roads such as the N5, are often urged to remain cautious due to the risk of animals crossing unexpectedly, especially during early morning and evening hours. – @NewsSA_Online
