South African women’s football has taken a giant leap forward after the South African Football Association (SAFA), Hollywoodbets and the SABC, with an exciting new era for the Hollywoodbets Super League.
Announced at the SABC Arena on Tuesday, the changes show the strong commitment to growing ladies’ football in the entire country and creating more opportunities for women players, clubs and supporters across the country.
Lydia Monyepao, SAFA CEO, said in the new season, the league will move from 16 teams to two groups of eight teams. The new format will help reduce travelling costs for clubs, improve match day experiences and bring more competitive football during the season.
She said one of the biggest achievements is the introduction of a championship match, which will give fans a major football event to enjoy while also creating more excitement around the league.
“The new structure also prepares the league for a two-division system from 2027, where promotion and relegation will help improve competition and develop more talent in women’s football. Fans can also look forward to better football experiences through the new digital platform, www.nwl.co.za, improved television coverage on SABC, stronger radio promotion and easier streaming access.
Festival-style match weekends will also bring supporters closer to the game and create a better atmosphere for players and fans,” Monyepao said.
She added that the new format will improve the experience for supporters, strengthen competition between clubs and increase the number of matches shown on SABC. Monyepao also thanked Hollywoodbets for continuing to support women’s football and helping SAFA achieve its Women’s Football Strategy goals.

Hollywood Group spokesperson Vuyisile Ngobese said Hollywoodbets has always believed in the power and potential of women’s football. He said the new structure will create a stronger platform for clubs and players while giving supporters a better football experience.
SABC Head of Sport, Keletso Totlhanyo, said the broadcaster is proud to support the growth and empowerment of women in sport.
He said women’s football deserves respect, support and a brighter future and SABC is committed to making the game accessible to communities across South Africa.
The new Hollywoodbets Super League era is expected to bring stronger competition, more sponsorship opportunities, better fan experiences and long-term growth for women’s football in South Africa. It is another proud achievement for ladies’ football and a major step towards a fully professional women’s game in the country. – @NewsSA_Online
