A MASTERCLASS IN AFRICAN LUXURY: Saso’s Marquee Experience Steals the Show

By Sitha Maliwa:

As the roar of the crowd echoed across the racecourse and the country’s fashion elite descended on the Hollywoodbets Durban July, one destination stood above the rest, transforming luxury into an unforgettable experience. Saso’s Marquee Experience returned for its third consecutive year, once again proving why it has become one of the most coveted spaces at South Africa’s premier horse racing and lifestyle event.

This was more than a marquee. It was a celebration of African brilliance.

From the moment guests stepped inside, they were immersed in a world where contemporary African elegance met timeless sophistication. Every carefully curated detail reflected creativity, prestige and cultural pride, setting the tone for a day that effortlessly blended fashion, music, fine dining and premium hospitality.

The defining moment arrived when MaXhosa Africa unveiled its breathtaking Atelier Collection in a spectacular runway presentation that left the audience captivated. Making its historic debut at the Hollywoodbets Durban July, the collection celebrated African craftsmanship at its finest, where intricate design, impeccable tailoring and bold storytelling merged into wearable works of art.

Models glided confidently down the runway draped in striking creations that honoured heritage while embracing modern luxury. Each garment became a statement – an expression of identity, innovation and African excellence. Guests watched in awe as the collection transformed the marquee into a world-class fashion theatre.

The visual spectacle extended far beyond the runway.

MaXhosa Africa’s unmistakable design philosophy was woven throughout the venue itself. Bespoke furniture, luxurious couches, handcrafted cushions, elegant rugs, stylish umbrellas and carefully selected décor pieces reflected the brand’s signature aesthetic, bringing this year’s “country allure” and African frontier-inspired theme vividly to life. The result was an immersive environment where every corner became a masterpiece of design.

Just when guests believed the fashion show had reached its peak, the atmosphere exploded.

International dance phenomenon Robot Boii made a surprise appearance, electrifying the runway with his infectious energy and signature choreography. His unexpected performance fused fashion, music and movement into one exhilarating moment, instantly becoming one of the day’s biggest highlights and sparking excitement throughout the marquee.

As daylight faded into an unforgettable evening, the soundtrack of celebration grew louder.

Amapiano heavyweight Kabza De Small commanded the stage with a headline performance that kept the crowd dancing long into the afternoon. Hip-hop icon K.O., alongside Sykes, DJ LeSoul, Benny Maverick, DJ Feel, Goldmax and an impressive line-up of artists, ensured there was never a quiet moment. Together, they delivered an electrifying musical journey that perfectly complemented the glamour surrounding them.

Adding an emotional touch to the festivities was the specially curated Stella Artois Moment.

Acclaimed vocalist Zawadi Yamungu delivered a soul-stirring performance celebrating African heritage, identity and artistic expression. Her powerful vocals captivated the audience, creating one of the day’s most heartfelt moments and reminding guests that luxury is not only about elegance – it is also about culture, storytelling and shared experiences.

No celebration of this calibre would be complete without exceptional cuisine.

Renowned Chef Tuladou crafted a vibrant Harvest Table in partnership with Rajah, Knorr and Robertsons, presenting an unforgettable culinary experience inspired by authentic African flavours, seasonal ingredients and generous hospitality. Every dish reflected the same attention to detail that defined the entire event, offering guests a feast worthy of the occasion.

As glasses of Moët & Chandon were raised in celebration, the marquee paused to honour another remarkable milestone – three successful years of Saso’s Marquee Experience redefining premium hospitality at the Hollywoodbets Durban July. The celebratory toast symbolised not only another successful event but also the continued evolution of a brand that has become synonymous with luxury, innovation and African excellence.

Supported by an impressive portfolio of premium partners, including MaXhosa Africa, Stella Artois, Moët & Chandon, Hennessy, Mercedes-Benz, Rajah, Knorr, Robertsons and Red Bull, every aspect of the experience reflected world-class execution and a shared commitment to celebrating African creativity on the grandest stage.

Reflecting on the event’s success, Lusaso “Saso” Ngcobo said the vision has always been to create something that is proudly African while continuously raising the standard.

“Every year we challenge ourselves to create something that feels fresh, memorable and proudly African. Seeing our guests experience the MaXhosa Atelier showcase, celebrate incredible music and enjoy moments curated by our partners was incredibly rewarding. We’re proud of what we’ve built over the past three years, and this year’s edition was our most exciting yet.”

Following its recognition as Best Marquee in 2025, Saso’s Marquee Experience has once again elevated the benchmark for luxury hospitality at the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

As the final performances came to an end and guests departed with memories of a truly extraordinary day, one thing became abundantly clear: Saso’s Marquee Experience is no longer simply an event within the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

It is a cultural institution. A destination where African fashion commands the runway, music ignites the soul, culinary artistry delights the senses and luxury finds its most authentic expression. With each passing year, Saso’s Marquee Experience continues to redefine what it means to celebrate African excellence – leaving an indelible mark on one of the continent’s most prestigious social calendars. – @NewsSA_Online
