TRAGEDY AT WSU: Senior university official gunned down outside Mthatha Campus

By Sitha Maliwa: Sinethemba Mpambane (Image: WSU website) A veil of grief has fallen over Walter Sisulu University (WSU) following the shocking assassination of one of its highest-ranking officials.  Sinethemba Mpambane, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Institutional Support and Development, was brutally gunned down outside the university’s Nkululekweni facility on the evening of Wednesday, 19 June 2025. The ambush unfolded at approximately 6:00 PM, just metres from the university’s Nelson Mandela Drive Campus, along the busy N2 highway. VARSITY ARREST: Man arrested for WSU shooting as varsity closes campus yet again

By Mpumzi Mshweshwe (Image: Facebook) A 54-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder following a shooting that claimed the life of one student and injured two others at the Walter Sisulu University Mthatha Campus. The arrest came soon after the university decided to close the campus and conduct learning and teaching online. The closure only affected the Mthatha campus but not the other campuses of the university The police said the unnamed suspect is expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s court on 22 April. BREAKING NEWS: One student killed, others injured as residence manager fires shots at WSU students

By Mpumzi Mshweshwe (Image: WSU Website) One student was killed and two others injured when a residence manager allegedly fired shots at protesting students in the early hours today at Water Sisulu University, Mthatha Campus. The two wounded students were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The manager allegedly attempted to come out to talk with the students who came to his residence within the campus, but the protesting students, who were outside his house, allegedly chased and attacked the manager. The residence manager, who stays within the institution with his family, was approached by the students at about 7 am. PROTESTS: Varsity closes campuses and student residences with immediate effect due to protests

By Mpumzi Mshweshwe There have been ongoing protests by students from the various Walter Sisulu University campuses, the university has been affected by a series of student protests in the past week with their main campus the Mthatha campus and the Komani campus being deemed the most disruptive. WSU was forced to close the doors for students to all its campuses and residences due to aggressive student protests.
