Making Waves: Swimming in early childhood and combating aquaphobia

By Sitha Maliwa

We live in a world where water is an integral part of our daily lives, therefore introducing swimming to children as part of early childhood development is not merely beneficial—it is essential. “The ability to swim nurtures confidence, enhances physical health, and, most critically, ensures safety in an environment where drowning remains a leading cause of unintentional death among children,” says Tiffany Miquel.

An urgency of addressing aquaphobia:
Aquaphobia, is a common issue that can impedes a child’s ability to engage in aquatic activities and hinders children’s safety awareness. Early positive experiences with water can significantly reduce this fear, providing children with a life-saving skill. Without early intervention, aquaphobia can persist into adulthood, affecting individual’s experiences with recreation and leisure.

An urgent need for interventions:
In South Africa, the statistics surrounding child drownings are alarming. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) reports that drowning incidents are prevalent, especially among children aged 1 to 4 years. In 2024 December Festive Season to January 2025, alone, over 38 children were victims of drowning, highlighting an urgent need for strategies that empower children with swimming skills. These tragic figures reveal a critical gap in aquatic education, emphasizing the importance of instilling swimming abilities at a young age.

The role of swimming in early childhood development:
Swimming is more than just an enjoyable pastime—it is an enriching experience that promotes various aspects of childhood development. Engaging in swimming lessons helps enhance motor skills, encourages social interaction, and builds self-confidence. Furthermore, the rhythmic activity of swimming has proven benefits for mental well-being, allowing children to express themselves better and cope with anxiety.

A lifeline for young learners:
At the forefront of this movement is the Slash Aquademy Swimming School, dedicated to providing children with the necessary skills and confidence to navigate aquatic environments safely.
