Women are redefining the future of retail and property, driving innovation and inclusivity across the industry. Their dedication and leadership continue to shape a more dynamic and forward-thinking landscape.
A 2022 report conducted by WPN on SA real estate investment trusts (REIT), shows that the average executive female representation was 15% between 2013 and 2021, with non-executive females only amounting to 25%. At Attacq, 54% of employees and 45% of the board members are women.
Attacq Limited, is an innovative REIT based in South Africa, with a vision to create sustainable value for all stakeholders and is listed on both the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and A2X Markets. From pioneering leadership to emerging sustainability initiatives, the women of Attacq, across every role, are transforming the built environment and the communities within it with passion, expertise, and forward-thinking innovation.
At the forefront of this is Yasmeen Lorgat, General Manager of Mall of Africa; Debbie Theron, Head of Business Development, and Mischa Tessendorf, Sustainability Project Manager, all of whom are championed by CEO Jackie Van Niekerk, a leader who continues to break barriers in an industry still dominated by men. Together, these women are not just shattering glass ceilings, they are laying the foundation for the cities of tomorrow and reshaping the landscape of the property industry.
Since joining Attacq, Lorgat has transformed the Mall of Africa into a hub of retail renaissance, securing top-tier international brands like EL&N and Decathlon while endorsing homegrown talents like GALXBOY and Beauty on Tap. “I’m excited to shape transformative experiences for shoppers and retailers to thrive,” Yasmeen shares. Her vision extends far beyond retail, as she prepares Mall of Africa for its major 10-year renewal cycle. Lorgat is setting the stage for the next decade of growth and evolution, ensuring the mall remains an industry leader.
But it’s not just in retail where Attacq’s women are making their mark. Theron, Head of Business Development, brings over three decades of expertise. Debbie’s approach is all about connection and collaboration, skills she uses beyond the boardroom, fostering strategic partnerships that drive Attacq’s vision forward. “It’s about opening doors of opportunity and nurturing relationships,” she says, underscoring her belief that long-term success comes from trust.
As Attacq continues to create mixed-use precincts that integrate people and businesses, Debbie is ensuring these spaces foster sustainable growth and vibrant communities. Focusing on creating environments where both businesses and communities can grow together.
Rising star Mischa Tessendorf is fortifying Attacq’s sustainability efforts. She has been instrumental in implementing solar PV projects, managing carbon emissions reporting, and guiding the company toward green building ratings like EDGE. Her work is not just about reducing Attacq’s carbon footprint, but about setting a precedent for sustainability in the property sector. “I’m driven by the opportunity to create spaces that not only foster growth but are environmentally responsible,” Mischa explains, reflecting her commitment to a resilient future. – @NewsSA_Online
