In a significant move towards enhancing healthcare access in South Africa, the EU Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Innovative Pharmaceutical Association South Africa (IPASA), will host a high-level roundtable on 2 April 2025. The event will focus on fostering collaborative discussions regarding the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI) Act. The NHI Act represents a key milestone in South Africa’s journey towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC), aiming to ensure equitable and sustainable access to quality healthcare for all citizens.
The roundtable, themed “Advancing NHI Implementation: Innovation, Access, and Collaborative Partnerships”, has been designed to bring together key stakeholders from government, industry, and patient advocacy groups. By facilitating dialogue among these diverse sectors, the event will explore how the NHI framework can enhance access to innovative treatments while promoting partnerships that contribute to a sustainable healthcare system.
The event will be officially opened by H.E. Mrs. Sandra Kramer, the EU Ambassador to South Africa. Two expert panel discussions will form the core of the event, diving into the regulatory and collaborative frameworks necessary to make the NHI Act effective in improving healthcare delivery and patient access to innovative treatments.
The first panel discussion will explore the role of the NHI Act in shaping healthcare delivery and ensuring access to innovation. This session will focus on addressing regulatory challenges, procurement models, and the role of Health Technology Assessments (HTAs) in facilitating equitable access to life-saving treatments. The panel will be moderated by Khulekani Mathe, CEO of Business Unity South Africa.
The expert panelists will include Dr. Anban Pillay, deputy director-general: health regulation and compliance at the National Department of Health, Rhulani Nhlaniki, president of IPASA and CEO of Pfizer, Mark Blecher, chief director for health & social development at the National Treasury, Dr. Stan Moloabi, principal officer of the Government Employees Medical Scheme, and Dr. Katlego Mothudi, managing director of the Board of Healthcare Funders of Southern Africa.
The second panel discussion will shift its focus to enhancing patient access through efficient and collaborative partnerships in innovative medicines. This session will examine the importance of public-private partnerships (PPPs), local manufacturing, and patient advocacy in improving access to innovative treatments. The discussion will explore how these collaborative efforts can be optimized within the NHI framework to ensure broader healthcare access. Panelists for this session will include Glaudina Loots, director for health Innovation at the Department of Science, Innovation & Technology, Kelly du Plessis, CEO and founder of Rare Diseases South Africa, and Bada Pharasi, CEO of IPASA.
The roundtable is a vital opportunity for stakeholders, both online and in-person, to engage directly with one another. It aims to foster a collaborative approach to the NHI implementation by aligning policy objectives with industry expertise and addressing the real needs of patients. The event will allow participants to discuss challenges and propose solutions that will help streamline the NHI system while ensuring access to essential treatments for all South Africans.
IPASA represents 24 leading pharmaceutical companies dedicated to advancing healthcare by advocating for policies that improve patient access to safe, high-quality, and affordable medicines. IPASA’s mission is to drive healthcare innovation and ensure that South African patients can benefit from the latest medical advancements.
As South Africa moves closer to implementing the NHI, discussions such as those hosted by the EU Chamber of Commerce and IPASA will be crucial in shaping the future of healthcare in the country. By fostering collaboration and exploring innovative solutions, stakeholders can work together to ensure that the NHI framework successfully delivers equitable healthcare access for all South Africans, ultimately improving the health and well-being of the entire nation.
This roundtable represents an important step toward aligning healthcare policy with the evolving needs of South African society. As the country works to meet the ambitious goals set by the NHI, collaboration between government bodies, the private sector, and patient advocacy groups will be essential for achieving long-term success. – @NewsSA_Online
