South African horse racing marks a historic turning point today as Hollywood Sportsbook Holdings, better known as Hollywoodbets, officially takes the reins of Gold Circle following the final approval of the KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulatory Authority (KZNERA).
The long-awaited green light arrives just days before the launch of the 2025 Champions Season this Saturday, signalling what industry stakeholders are calling a “new dawn” for horse racing in the province.
The acquisition, in development since early 2023, brings with it a much-needed R500 million investment package aimed at reviving and modernising KwaZulu-Natal’s beleaguered racing industry. Once a jewel in South Africa’s sporting crown, the sector has struggled under economic strain and shifts in the betting landscape for much of the 21st century. Hollywoodbets’ intervention is now widely regarded as a lifeline – and a transformative one at that.
“We are fully committed to securing the future of the horse racing industry in KwaZulu-Natal,” said Suren Rampersadh, CEO of Hollywoodbets. “This is more than a business decision, it’s about preserving a legacy and building a sustainable, world-class future for all involved.”
The deal not only promises financial stability but is also poised to safeguard the livelihoods of approximately 6,000 individuals working in and around the industry. The revitalisation plan includes upgrades to racing venues, improved stabling and training infrastructure, increased prize money, and a reimagined race calendar designed to boost participation and betting turnover.
Already, Hollywoodbets has made significant progress on the ground. Renovations are well underway at the iconic Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse, including a full-scale upgrade of the Polytrack and a multimillion-rand enhancement of the night-racing lighting system. These improvements aim to bring Durban’s race nights in line with top international standards.
At the Summerveld Training Centre, detailed plans have been laid out for infrastructure development – including new grooms’ accommodation, stabling enhancements, and major upgrades to roads and roofing -further cementing the group’s long-term commitment.
Industry insiders say Hollywoodbets’ approach is as strategic as it is ambitious: modernise, professionalise, and broaden the appeal of horse racing to a younger, more diverse audience. This includes aligning with global entertainment trends and reintroducing racing as a mainstream sporting attraction.
The timing could not be more opportune. The 2025 Champions Season begins this weekend at Hollywoodbets Greyville, ushering in three months of top-tier racing that culminates in the 129th running of the iconic Hollywoodbets Durban July on Saturday, 5 July. As the gates open on a new season -and a new era -hopes are high that the sport will gallop its way back into the hearts of fans across the province and beyond. – @NewsSA_Online
