There were emotional scenes as the first group of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers who were deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) arrived in Bloemfontein to reunite with their families early hours of this morning (Saturday).

The soldiers earlier touched down at Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria on Friday night and travelled by buses to Bloemfontein early this morning.

It was a long-awaited homecoming after months of service in the conflict-affected region of the DRC, where they were part of a peacekeeping mission under the SAMIDRC and stationed in eastern DRC.

The reunion at the military base was filled with joy and tears, as their loved ones and colleagues welcomed the brave men and women back home. Some families had travelled long distances to be there, and many embraced their relatives tightly and emotionally, with tears of relief and happiness. At times, it was laughter and enjoyment knowing that they are back home safely.

“It’s a blessing to have him back safe, we have been praying every day for this moment,” said Olga Relana, the wife of one soldier.

After spending months in a high-stress environment, the soldiers will now receive psychological support for a few weeks before they return to their normal duties at their various bases across the country. SANDF officials confirmed that counseling and rest are essential to help the service men and women recover and adjust back to home life.

“These soldiers have seen and experienced a lot in the DRC. It’s important that we support their mental health before they resume their full duties,” said Motshega on Friday during the media briefing held in Bloemfontein.

The deployment to the DRC forms part of South Africa’s commitment to promoting peace and stability on the African continent. While in the DRC, the soldiers helped protect civilians, assisted local security forces and contributed to peacekeeping efforts in challenging conditions. It was not an easy task, as they had to fight running battles with rebels. At least 14 SANDF members were killed on the battlefield and scores of them were injured

For now, however, the focus is on rest and family. Many of the soldiers expressed their happiness to be home and looked forward to spending quality time with their children, partners and relatives.

“I missed my family so much. Just being able to hug them again is the best feeling,” said Sgt Motshidisi Mothibedi.

As more groups are expected to return in the coming days, South Africans are encouraged to keep showing their support and appreciation for the men and women who serve the country with pride and sacrifice. – @NewsSA _Online.
