SZA BECOMES  VAN’S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR: A celebration of creativity, freedom, and self-expression

By Sitha Maliwa:

In an electrifying move that merges music, fashion, and youth culture, Vans has welcomed SZA as its new Artistic Director. This multi-year partnership is set to ignite creativity, celebrate individuality, and inspire a generation to embrace their authentic selves. With her fearless vision and unapologetic artistry, SZA is taking the Vans legacy of “Off the Wall” spirit to bold, new heights.

SZA, the five-time Grammy-winning powerhouse, has always been more than an artist – she is a revolutionary shaping the emotional tone of a generation. Her genre-defying sound and fearless authenticity create a space where softness meets strength, vulnerability meets power, and fashion norms are challenged. Now, she brings that vision to Vans, a brand that has long championed creativity, non-conformity, and youth culture.

“In Vans, I feel free!” says SZA. “I’ve been wearing Knu Skools and other styles for years; they’ve always had an ethos I connect with. As Artistic Director, my mission is to show that joy, community, creativity, and fashion are all still intersectional. That humanity, culture, and connection are still the access points. I’ve learned that bravery and curiosity are the cures for uncertainty; it’s a lifestyle, and Vans champions that spirit. They stand where I stand, and I’m honored to invite a whole bunch of people to stand Off the Wall with us.”

The partnership debuts with a breath-taking brand anthem – a dreamy ode to self-reflection, art, and vulnerability, featuring one of SZA’s favourite Vans footwear styles, the Knu Skool in Black/White. Originally designed in 1997, the Knu Skool reimagined the classic Old Skool™ for a new generation, with its puffed-up tongue, 3D Sidestripe, and oversized laces. This isn’t just footwear – it’s a statement, a canvas for personal expression.

Directed and photographed by Sophie Jones and styled by Alejandra Hernandez, the campaign captures the essence of SZA’s vision: fearless creativity, raw emotion, and unapologetic authenticity. It’s an invitation for everyone to step into a world where being yourself isn’t just encouraged = it’s celebrated.

The Vans Knu Skool in Black/White is available now at select Vans stores and online at Vans.com.

SZA’s journey is marked by record-breaking albums, global tours, and over 70 billion streams worldwide. From Grammy wins to box office triumphs with her film One of Them Days, she continues to push boundaries, challenge expectations, and redefine what it means to be a fearless creative. With Vans, she now invites the world to stand “Off the Wall” with her – bold, brave, and unshakably herself. – @NewsSA_Online
