We saw a lot of politicians hopping from one church to another during the Easter period, and you wonder what the motive is behind all these sudden church visits? Because if one is a true believer, they must go to church every Sunday and not make a fuss about it or pose for pictures merely to be seen to have been at church.
Easter is a sacred Holy time when Christians all over the world commemorate the death, the burial and the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Concerning these sudden visits, some Christians would comment and say, “You heard politician so and so loves God”, “did you hear his speech and that he mentioned Jesus and God”, ” he also quoted a verse from the Bible”, “he is a Godly man and he loves God.”
I was pondering upon a time when I was attending a certain church where a politician belonging to a certain political party came to campaign for votes. From the pulpit, she unashamedly told the congregants, ” I am a member of this church and you must vote for me.” The pastor supported the idea, urging the church members to vote for her because she is a member of the church. That was my first and last time I saw the woman in the church. Well, she was not a member of the church.
I think before the government officials initiate a dialog at a church, key issues which the Christian community is not happy with should be addressed first or amended.
-The church of Jesus Christ cannot be regulated by the government.
-The church cannot be closed under any circumstances because it is a place where people get healed, and it is an essential service.
-The National Anthem, as composed by Enoch Sontonga, cannot be complete without singing “Woza Moya OyiNgcwele”.
-Legalising homosexuality does not eradicate poverty in Africa.
-Legalizing abortion or prostitution doesn’t help the economy of South Africa.
-Biblical studies and prayer should be brought back in schools because it is important for the young ones to trust in God
I strongly believe that Scripture and prayer in school should not have been abolished as South Africa has Christians in the majority. As South Africa is a Christian nation by population, I believe that the righteous should be in the right positions.
Final Thought
A certain politician was on vacation at Sun City and one Sunday morning, he decided to visit a small Methodist church at a nearby Ledig village. He came with his entourage and when he was asked why he visited the church? His answer was simple: ” I am a Methodist, so I was longing to worship and sing hymns with my fellow Methodists”. So basically, he came to worship, not to campaign. That is what every politician should do – go to church to worship and not be granted a platform on the pulpit because they are not preachers.
Non-Christians should stay away from a pulpit because it is a sacred Holy place meant to pull people out of the pit of hell, to pull people out of the pit of anxiety and depression and is a place from where healing flows. It is not a place where politicians made promises to the people of God that will be hard for them to deliver.
Pastor Att Boshoff of the Christian Revival Church was very clear that he will not give any opportunity for a politician to come and campaign for their political parties on his pulpit. According to Pastor Att, politicians must come sit down and be taught the Word of God and they must be born again and receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. This is what every church must do.
On that note, it is high time for Christians to lead in politics because the Word of God says, “when the righteous lead, the people rejoice and when the wicked lead, the people mourn” ( Proverbs 29:2)
Daniel was a politician and he didn’t preach a single message. However, he led the whole nation to the Lord after that Miracle in a Lion’s Den. Joseph was a Pharaoh in Egypt, a politician, so what is stopping Christians from being in politics and speaking God’s truth?
