A 14-year-old South African footballer is proving that talent, determination, and belief can open doors far beyond home soil. David Chinonso Kumani Uchehara, a learner at Highlands North Boys High School, has recently returned from Italy after an impressive stint training with top clubs AS Roma and Frosinone Calcio – an experience that may well shape the future of his promising career.
David, an attacking midfielder known for his composure and creativity, embraced the opportunity with both excitement and maturity. Reflecting on his time in Italy, he described a welcoming environment coupled with a demanding football culture.
“I liked the training facilities and everyone was welcoming,” he said. “But the intensity of Italian players was more than that of South African football.”
The step up in pace and competitiveness challenged the young player, but it also highlighted his strengths. Despite facing a language barrier, David quickly adapted, allowing his performances on the pitch to speak for him.
“Coaches were very happy with my performance and amazed at how wonderful I am on my feet,” he said.
His natural position as a centre attacking midfielder allows him to express his technical ability and vision – qualities that did not go unnoticed during the trials. His confidence grew from the very first session.
“On the first day of the trials, I performed really well, which gave me more confidence and made it feel surreal,” he added.
Even when faced with physical setbacks, including training through injury, David showed resilience – an attribute often associated with elite athletes. His playing style and mindset have drawn inspiration from top international stars such as Martin Ødegaard and Jude Bellingham, whom he admires not only for their skill but also for their humility.
David’s breakthrough opportunity came after he was spotted by football agent Jorge Abong of Rojo Soccer Agency during a local match. Recognising his potential, the agent played a key role in preparing and facilitating his journey to Italy, opening the door to trials with elite European clubs.
Behind his journey is a strong support system led by his father, Lawrence Uchehara, who recognised his son’s potential at an early age.
“I discovered his football talent when he was just four years old,” he said. “I always believed he would become a star, and I made sure he balanced football with his education.”
For his father, the experience was both emotional and rewarding.
“I was so excited. I couldn’t wait for him to go to Italy, and I prayed about it,” he said. “When he got there, he received exceptional treatment. I was very impressed.”
Feedback from the Italian coaches further confirmed the young player’s potential. “They said David has good feet and is a good player,” his father noted.
While the experience provided valuable exposure, both father and son remain grounded. Education continues to be a priority alongside football, with a clear understanding that both paths are important for long-term success.
Looking ahead, David has set his sights high. “My dream is to become a professional footballer and hopefully one day play for Chelsea FC,” he said.
He also offered advice to other aspiring players: “Never give up and always do your best.” With plans already in place for a return to Italy later this year, David’s journey is far from over.
