FROM PAVEMENTS TO POWER: The unbreakable rise of Dr Kennedy Roland Okongbe

By Sitha Maliwa:

In a world where adversity silences many dreams, Dr Kennedy Roland Okongbe turned hardship into a stepping stone – and built an empire from it.

Born and raised in Nigeria, his story does not begin with privilege or promise. It begins with loss. At just 19, following the passing of his parents, he left everything familiar behind and journeyed to Ghana in search of opportunity. What awaited him was not opportunity – but survival.

For four years, he lived without a home. Pavements became his bed. Hunger, uncertainty, and rejection were daily companions. Yet even in those darkest moments, he held tightly to something many lose far earlier – vision. While others saw despair, he saw a future waiting to be built.

To survive, he did whatever he could. Construction labour. Selling clothes. Selling food on the roadside. Every coin earned was not just for survival – it was an investment in a dream far bigger than his circumstances.

At 25, after six relentless years in Ghana, he made a bold move. With the little he had saved, he travelled to South Africa – not just to start over, but to rise.

South Africa tested him again. The struggles did not disappear. But this time, he arrived with something powerful: experience, resilience, and a plan. He returned to the grind – odd jobs, selling snacks on the street – but now every move was strategic.

Then came a turning point.

In 2012, he met the woman who would become his wife and partner in purpose. Together, they began laying the foundation of what would soon become a business empire.

By 2013, they had saved enough to purchase a small convenience store in Bellevue, Johannesburg. It wasn’t glamorous – but it was a beginning. That single store became a gateway, generating capital and opening doors to bigger ventures.

What followed was a masterclass in vision and reinvention.

In 2014, spotting an opportunity in the rise of ride-hailing platforms, he entered the transport and logistics space. Starting with one vehicle, he built a fleet of six within a year – proving his instinct for scalable business models.

But he didn’t stop there.

Driven by his passion for creativity, he launched KR Entertainment, which later evolved into KR Capital Group -a multi-sector holding company spanning real estate, IT, logistics, and multimedia. It became a symbol of African innovation and ambition.

Yet his boldest move came when he pivoted into property.

Recognising the limitations of seasonal income, he sold his entire fleet of vehicles to invest in real estate. It was a risk – but one that paid off. Today, his portfolio stretches across South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, and the United Arab Emirates, managing multi-million-dollar residential and commercial properties.

From sleeping on pavements to owning properties across continents – his journey defies logic, but defines possibility.

In 2019, he expanded into oil and gas, supplying petroleum products across Southern Africa. Soon after, he entered the world of financial technology, leading the development of a London-based fintech company focused on crypto, blockchain, and the future of digital finance.

But beyond business, there is purpose. A man deeply rooted in faith, Dr Kennedy pursued a Doctorate in Missions and Evangelism. He founded The Evidence of Christ Ministries, travelling the world to preach, teach, and inspire. His spiritual impact would eventually earn him recognition as a Human Rights Ambassador in 2021.

And still – he gives back.  Through the KR Foundation, he has fed the hungry, clothed the needy, supported education, and created opportunities for youth. From soccer tournaments in Delta State to food drives in Alexandra and Yeoville during COVID-19, his philanthropy reflects a man who never forgot where he came from.

Dr  Okongbe’s story is not just about success. It is about endurance. Faith. Vision. And the unshakable belief that no matter how low life takes you, you can rise – higher than you ever imagined. Because sometimes, the people who start with nothing… build everything. – @NewsSA_Online
