A 24-year-old man wanted in connection with a murder case in the North West province has been arrested in Odendaalsrus in the Free State on Friday after Welkom police Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) received a tip-off.

The suspect had allegedly been evading police for more than a year after a murder that took place in Koster in April 2025.

His arrest marks a breakthrough in the case after authorities continued searching for him across provincial boundaries.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Palesa Thabana, the police received a tip-off regarding the whereabouts of the wanted suspect.

She said the information led police to a house in K9 Section in Kutlwanong on the outskirts of Odendaalsrus, where the suspect was allegedly hiding.

“Police carefully planned their approach and moved in on the property to avoid any possibility of the suspect escaping.

The suspect noticed the officers as they approached the house and immediately attempted to flee on foot; however, police involved in the operation had anticipated such a move and had already secured the surrounding area,” Thabana said.

She said with all possible escape routes closed off, the suspect was unable to evade arrest and he was quickly apprehended and executed the warrant of arrest that had been issued in connection with the murder case.

The alleged murder suspect is expected to appear before the court on Monday, where he will face a charge related to the murder allegedly committed in Koster.

“The successful operation highlights the importance of intelligence-led policing and cooperation among specialised police units in tracking down wanted suspects.

The arrest also demonstrates the determination of law enforcement agencies to ensure that suspects who attempt to evade justice are eventually brought before the courts,” Thabana said.

While police have not yet released further details about the circumstances surrounding the murder in Koster, investigators believe the arrest will assist in advancing the case and bringing closure to those affected by the incident.

The Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lt-General Solly Lesia, commended his men in blue of the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit for their efforts, vigilance and commitment in tracing and arresting the wanted suspect. – @NewsSA_Online
