FROM STREETS TO SCREENS: Uber Fuels South Africa’s World Cup Fever

By Sitha Maliwa:

As the 2026 World Cup ignites football fever across the globe, Uber is making sure South Africans don’t just watch the beautiful game – they live it.

From discounted rides to electric fan zones to late-night food deliveries and exclusive matchday treats, Uber has launched a nationwide World Cup campaign designed to turn every fixture into an unforgettable occasion.

Running from 11 June to 19 July, the campaign promises to keep fans connected to the action, whether they are singing from the stands at public viewing venues or nervously pacing their living rooms during South Africa’s biggest matches.

For supporters eager to soak up the atmosphere, Uber is offering discounted rides to some of the country’s hottest fan destinations through the promo code MATCHDAY26. The deal covers all of Bafana Bafana’s World Cup fixtures, including blockbuster encounters against Mexico and Czechia.

Across Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria, fan parks are expected to come alive as thousands of supporters draped in national colours gather to share the highs and heartbreaks that only football can deliver.

But Uber’s World Cup play goes beyond the road.

In a first for the tournament, fans can customise their in-app experience by selecting their country of support, transforming every vehicle icon into a moving flag of national pride. It’s a small touch with a big message: football is about belonging.

For those choosing the couch over the crowd, Uber Eats is stepping into extra time. Delivery hours have been stretched until 2 am, ensuring no fan has to miss a minute of the action because of an empty fridge. Exclusive matchday deals and specially curated fan boxes, created in partnership with CityFuel, promise to bring stadium energy straight to the living room.

Uber says the campaign is about more than convenience; it’s about being part of one of South Africa’s biggest shared moments.

“Sport has a unique way of bringing people together, and the World Cup remains one of the country’s most celebrated shared experiences,” said Yahya Munir, Communications Manager for the Middle East and Africa at Uber. “We’re excited to help South Africans celebrate every moment of the tournament, whether fans are heading to a fan zone or watching from home.”

Having backed major sporting events in the country over the years, Uber is betting that this World Cup will be remembered not only for the goals and the glory, but for the experiences shared between friends, families and complete strangers united by football. This World Cup, the message from Uber is clear: wherever the game takes you, they’ve got the ride, the food and the matchday spirit to get you there. – @NewsSA_Online
