DRUG PROBE ENDS IN DEATH: Man found dead after fleeing into Bloemfontein building

A 33-year-old man was found dead on a sidewalk in Bloemfontein’s CBD on Friday morning after allegedly fleeing into a building while police were investigating the source of drugs found in the possession of a suspect.
According to a statement from the Free State Provincial Commissioner’s office, the incident occurred at about 11 am in Douglas Street, where members of the Bloemfontein K9 Unit were with a suspect who had been arrested for possession of drugs.
The statement said police were investigating the source of the drugs when an unidentified man ran into Kenlin Court.“Members chased after the unknown male, but he ran up the stairs and reached the door of a certain unit, opened and quickly locked the security door behind him,” the statement said.
Police reportedly heard people making noise outside the building shortly afterwards.
When they went outside, they allegedly found the man lying motionless on the sidewalk.
Crime scene experts were called to the scene, where the man was declared dead.
According to police, the key to the security door was found underneath the man’s body.
An inquest docket has been opened at Parkweg Police Station to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.“The investigation in the Inquest docket continues,” the statement said.
