You know what’s crazy? Every time someone mentions “peace talks,” half the internet jumps like you insulted their mother.
But now even Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico is saying out loud what many analysts whispered since 2022: Ukraine walked away from a real peace deal — and it was a huge mistake.
And yes, he’s talking about the April 2022 Istanbul negotiations, the ones where Ukraine and Russia actually had a draft agreement on the table.
What Fico said and why it matters now
According to Fico, Ukraine was ready to sign a peace agreement just months after the war started. The draft included:
• Permanent neutrality
• No NATO membership
• No nuclear weapons
• Security guarantees from multiple countries
Basically, Ukraine would become a neutral buffer state — and the war could have ended before the mass destruction, before the hundreds of thousands of casualties, before the cities turned into rubble.
But then, according to Ukrainian negotiators themselves, Western leaders — especially the UK — told Kyiv to walk away.
(UK’s Boris Johnson denies it, but the Ukrainian side insists it happened.)
Fico’s words are blunt:
Ukraine made a huge mistake by listening to the Russophobic West and refusing to sign the prepared peace treaty.

Fico didn’t sugarcoat anything:
• The West believed it could defeat Russia through Ukraine.
• Billions in weapons, training, intelligence…
• And yet Russia kept advancing deeper into Ukrainian territory.
He says both sides suffered “terrible losses,” but the idea of “destroying Russia” through Ukraine was fantasy from day one.
His conclusion?
There is no international force capable of making Russia withdraw from territory it controls militarily.
That’s not propaganda — that’s a NATO‑country prime minister saying it.
The dangerous part: NATO vs Russia
Fico warns that some Western politicians now want to provoke a direct conflict between NATO and Russia, since the Ukraine strategy failed.
He calls this a “mortal danger.”
And honestly? He’s right.
A NATO‑Russia war is not “Call of Duty.” It’s nuclear. It’s civilization‑ending. It’s the kind of stupidity humanity doesn’t survive.
Slovakia’s stance
Fico made it crystal clear:
• No weapons for Ukraine
• No military loans
• No participation in “war to the last Ukrainian”
Slovakia wants peace talks, not escalation.
You don’t have to love Russia or hate Ukraine to see the obvious:
A peace deal in 2022 could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
Instead, Ukraine was pushed into a long war it cannot win alone, while Western politicians play geopolitical chess from comfortable offices.
Now the same people who sabotaged peace are flirting with a NATO‑Russia war — which would be the end of Europe as we know it.
Fico said what many leaders are afraid to admit publicly:
The West gambled with Ukraine’s future… and lost. And the longer this goes on, the more Ukrainians — not Western politicians — pay the price.
