UDM CALLS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS INVESTIGATION: Alleged racial and sexist remarks by Bafana coach

By Becker Semela: Nqabayomzi Kwankwa of The United Democratic Movement (Image: Facebook) The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has taken a firm stand against alleged racist and sexist comments reportedly made by Bafana Bafana head coach, Hugo Broos, calling the remarks "unacceptable, demeaning and completely out of line with the values of South Africa’s Constitution". In two formal letters sent this week to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and the South African Football Association (SAFA), the UDM secretary general, Yongama Zigebe, requested an urgent investigation and strong corrective action against the national team coach. The party said the statements, if confirmed, threaten the dignity of the individuals involved and undermine South Africa’s...

By Bantu Holomisa: General Bantu Holomisa of the UDM party Dear Mr President and Chairperson Zibi,   1. I had the privilege of attending the extended Cabinet Lekgotla at the end of September 2025, where you, Mr President, emphasised that the fight against corruption and the looting of state resources would be a top priority for the Government of National Unity. You further noted that the current climate of corruption and mismanagement has severely undermined investor confidence and that this situation must be decisiv...

UDM AT 28: A party rooted in accountability and service

By Becker Semela The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has marked its 28th anniversary with a message of reflection, service and a renewed call for accountability in South Africa’s political landscape. Speaking truth to power In a statement to NewsSA, UDM Deputy President and Leader in parliament, Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, used the opportunity to remind South Africans about the party’s founding principles and its role as a voice for integrity and clean governance. “As the UDM marks another year in its journey, we pause to reflect, not with pride alone but with renewed purpose. From its birth in 1997, the movement has never sought glory. It has always sought impact, to stand between power and the people, to guard against complacency and to speak truth to authority,”...

UDM ON ITS FEET: Party brings hope and relief to flood victims

By Becker Semela: UDM food parcels (Image: Supplied) The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has once again risen to the occasion, providing vital support to communities hit hard by the devastating June 2025 floods across the Eastern Cape. On Wednesday, the party distributed food parcels and essential supplies to 680 households in Mthatha and surrounding areas. This marked the second phase of the UDM’s humanitarian response, following a similar relief effort in Butterworth on Saturday, where 481 families received assistance. The interventions were made possible through a R500,000 relief fund announced by UDM President General Bantu Holomisa - with R300,000 allocated for Mthatha and R200,000 for Butterworth. In Mthatha, beneficiaries included families from Thabo Mbek...

1976 UPRISING: Open letter in honour of youth month 16 June 2025

By Zandile Phiri: My fellow South Africans As the first young and female Acting Secretary General of the United Democratic Movement, I write this letter with both pride and sorrow in my heart. We find ourselves once again in the Month of Remembrance – June – a month etched into the history of South Africa as a time when the youth of 1976 stood up and declared: “Enough is enough.” They faced bullets with books, oppression with unity, and injustice with courage. To many, this month carries bittersweet memories – of pain and hope, of death and rebirth. Yet for some of our youth today, this legacy exists only within the pages of history books. It is with deep sadness that I reflect on how many of those brave souls who joined the struggle remain nameless and unrecognised. T...

A SWING FOR PEACE: The Ramaphosa-Trump talks are in the interest of both countries and the world

By Major-General (Ret) Bantu H. Holomisa: Maj-Genl. (Ret) Bantu Holomisa (Image: UDM website) As President Cyril Ramaphosa prepares for an important diplomatic engagement with the leadership of the United States, we take this opportunity to reflect on the recent tensions that have emerged between our two nations. These tensions have largely been attributed to unsubstantiated allegations of genocide and land being taken without compensation, among others, against certain communities within South Africa. I remember it as though it were just yesterday when I accompanied President Mandela and President Thabo Mbeki to the United States in October 1993, where President Mandela made a powerful appeal to the international community during his address to the United Nations General ...

FABRICATION: UDM rubbishes fake news targeting party deputy president Nqabayomzi Kwankwa

By Becker Semela: Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, MP (Image: pa.org.za) The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has come out strongly against a fake and defamatory post currently making the rounds on social media. The UDM acting secretary general, Zandile Phiri, said the post targets party deputy president, Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, with a fabricated image and a sensationalist headline designed to mislead the public. Phiri said the malicious post was nothing but a “shameful attempt at character assassination” as it shows how dangerous social media can be when used to spread lies and political propaganda. A picture showing Kwankwa with facial injuries that were clearly photoshopped was circulated, an act that has angered UDM leadership and members in general. "The UDM wants to make it absolu...

WHY WE SUPPORT: Parties clarify themselves on the national budget to account for their support for it.

By Mpumzi Mshweshwe UDM deputy president Nqabayomzi Kwankwa. (IMAGE: Facebook) \Political parties within and outside the government of national unity have come forward to state their stances on voting in a particular way on the controversial national budget. The United Democratic Movement party (UDM) is one of the parties that came forward to explain their reasons for voting for the national budget with the VAT increase. The party had refuted what it felt was propaganda being spread across social media speculating on why it voted in favour of the VAT hike. Also, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) was vocal on why it supported the budget saying instead of rejecting it completely, it would rather see the hike being applied as a temporary measure. The UDM clarified its position a...

More than 350 SASCO students join UDESMO in new twist in SA political landscape and students politics

By Mandla Simelane More than 350 South African Students Congress (SASCO) members have jumped ship to join the United Democratic Student Movement (UDESMO) in a move that signals a new shift in the student activism and the South African political landscape. The exodus from an ANC-aligned student movement marks a growth of the UDM student body within the tertiary institutions as students seek new political homes. United Democratic Movement (UDM) Eastern Cape provincial secretary, Bulelani Bobotyane, said the 350 SASCO students at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Mthatha Campus were motivated to join UDESMO because of the organisation's proven track record of prioritising students' interests. He said UDESMO has consistently demonstrated its commitment to fighti...
