The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has once again risen to the occasion, providing vital support to communities hit hard by the devastating June 2025 floods across the Eastern Cape.
On Wednesday, the party distributed food parcels and essential supplies to 680 households in Mthatha and surrounding areas. This marked the second phase of the UDM’s humanitarian response, following a similar relief effort in Butterworth on Saturday, where 481 families received assistance.
The interventions were made possible through a R500,000 relief fund announced by UDM President General Bantu Holomisa – with R300,000 allocated for Mthatha and R200,000 for Butterworth.
In Mthatha, beneficiaries included families from Thabo Mbeki and Masimini Centre (261 beneficiaries), Pola Park Junior Primary School, and Trucco. Additional distributions were made to residents at Upper Skit, Lower Skit, Eugene Centre, Tuba Hall, Lilitha B&B, and Zizamele Centres. Each package contained food items and toiletries, aimed at easing the burden of displaced and struggling households.

UDM Eastern Cape Provincial Secretary Bulelani Bobotyane emphasized the party’s motivation behind the initiative:
“These floods have taken lives, homes and dignity. The least we can do is bring relief and show that we care. The UDM will continue engaging with government departments to ensure that affected families are not left behind in the long-term recovery plans.”
He stressed that the work does not end here:
“This is not the end. We will keep pushing for housing, infrastructure repair and support for those who lost everything.”
Bobotyane further noted that the ongoing food relief campaign reflects the UDM’s commitment to tangible action and community upliftment during times of hardship.
Residents welcomed the support with gratitude, describing it as a lifeline at a time when many families remain in temporary shelters and community halls.
“This effort once again shows the UDM’s belief that politics must serve the people – especially in their hour of greatest need,” Bobotyane concluded. – @NewsSA_Online
