UDM AT 28: A party rooted in accountability and service

By Becker Semela The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has marked its 28th anniversary with a message of reflection, service and a renewed call for accountability in South Africa’s political landscape. Speaking truth to power In a statement to NewsSA, UDM Deputy President and Leader in parliament, Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, used the opportunity to remind South Africans about the party’s founding principles and its role as a voice for integrity and clean governance. “As the UDM marks another year in its journey, we pause to reflect, not with pride alone but with renewed purpose. From its birth in 1997, the movement has never sought glory. It has always sought impact, to stand between power and the people, to guard against complacency and to speak truth to authority,”...

OWNING THE CURVES: Zintsikelelo Madikwa redefining beauty, one bold step at a time

By Zenoyise John: Zubntsikelelo Madikwa (Image: Supplied) From the quiet hills of Mount Fletcher in the Eastern Cape to South Africa’s growing fashion and advocacy scenes, Zintsikelelo Madikwa is more than a pageant finalist—she’s a movement in motion. With elegance, heart, and purpose stitched into every step of her journey, she’s using fashion not just to dress bodies, but to elevate souls. In 2021, Zintsikelelo stood tall as a Miss Curvybody SA finalist, using the spotlight to challenge societal norms and spread a message of body acceptance and mental wellness. “Being a finalist wasn’t just about wearing a crown - it was about becoming a voice for those silenced by shame, bullying, and self-doubt.” Her campaign focused on body positivity, mental healt...

CROWN HIM: In the land of the vanishing fathers, Premier Mabuyane stood tall

By Zenoyise John: Caption:Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane walks away from the ibhoma, the sacred initiation hut, moments after ensuring his son's safe return - a rare display of presence, protection, and cultural pride in a time when many fathers are painfully absent (Image: Facebook) Let me be clear from the outset: I hold no brief for Premier Oscar Mabuyane. I am not a fan of his politics, nor do I admire his leadership record. But today, I set that aside - because some acts transcend politics. When Mabuyane took leave from his official duties to be present for his sons’ traditional initiation, he did more than fulfil a cultural obligation. He led - not from a podium, but from within his family. In a country buckling under the weight of absent fathers, h...

SAFE RETURN: Uncle and nephew back from the mountain, greeted with song and pride

By Becker Semela: The hills of the Eastern Cape stood witness to a powerful moment this past weekend, as the Stuurman family rejoiced in the safe return of two of their own - uncle and nephew, Thembinkosi and Luncedo Stuurman - who emerged from the mountain transformed, reborn as men through the sacred Xhosa rite of passage. For an entire month, they had stepped away from modern life and into sacred time - answering the ancestral call to undergo ulwaluko, the traditional Xhosa initiation into manhood. What they left behind was boyhood. What they returned with was something far deeper: honour, discipline, and an unspoken strength carved into them by fire, silence, and ceremony. Their return sparked scenes of uncontainable emotion. Traditional songs rang out, women u...
