The Mzansi Magic telenovela “Umkhokha: The Curse” has recently come to a close, but not without leaving behind a trail of controversy and heartache. Angel Zuma, who portrayed the character Nomkhosi Mthembu, has brought to light her challenging experiences during her time on the show, leaving tongues wagging among fans and industry insiders alike.

After two successful years, the telenovela came to a screeching halt on February 28, 2025, when the contract was unexpectedly not renewed. Fans were left stunned as the show, which had captivated audiences with its engaging storyline and intriguing characters, bid farewell. Known for its production by the acclaimed Duma Ndlovu under the Rhythm World banner, “Umkhokha” had established itself as a staple in weekday television.

However, it seems the end of the show was just the beginning of the revelations, as Zuma took to social media to express her feelings about her experience on set. In a heartfelt Instagram video, she shared the emotional turmoil she faced, especially after announcing her decision to leave the show.

“I never thought in my life that those people would do such things to me because I said I was leaving. I have never cried so much in my life. I have never been so hurt, disappointed, I felt betrayed,” she said. Currently in Toronto, Canada, performing Rafiki, on Lion King, Zuma highlighted that her departure was met with hostility and intimidation from those she once respected within the industry.

Insiders have suggested that Zuma’s decision to leave was anticipated long before her actual exit, with sources claiming she was supposed to depart as early as September of the previous year. Unfortunately, this decision led to her being mistreated on set, facing pressure to stay. Rumours circulated that she was labelled a “diva,” an effort attributed to tarnish her reputation as she prepared for her exit.

Another cast member, Siphelele Dlamini, who played Nokubonga, commented on her post:

“I remember it like it was yesterday.  Kahle kahle, we need a podcast for Umkhokha cast and crew,” she said.  As the show’s finale approached, numerous actors reportedly began leaving in droves, pointing towards a culture of favouritism and discontent behind the scenes.

A source close to the production remarked on Zuma’s character, saying, “She was the sweetest girl in the cast,” and emphasised the unjust treatment she faced leading up to her departure. The source condemned the misleading narratives that were allegedly spun to manipulate public perception.- @NewsSA
