In a remarkable gesture of support for education, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, in partnership with the Adopt-a-School Foundation, has donated coding and robotics kits worth R1 million to three schools in Limpopo province. This generous donation, aimed at addressing the digital divide, was made to Laerskool Bergvlam, Makwarela Primary School, and Mbilwi Secondary School. The handover ceremony, which took place at Laerskool Bergvlam recently, marked a pivotal moment for the students and teachers of these schools.

The event was attended by key figures, including  Jeanhyuk Yim, Deputy Head of Mission at the Korean Embassy, and  Narae Yoo, a researcher at the embassy.  Rendani Munzhelele, District Director of Vhembe East, played a significant role in recommending the recipient schools. Also present were Banyana Mohajane, Executive Programmes at the Adopt-a-School Foundation, and Senior Communications Manager Zelda Jacobs.

In her speech, Mohajane expressed the foundation’s pride in its partnership with the Korean Embassy, emphasizing the importance of bridging the digital gap in education. “This collaboration is key in aligning with the Department of Basic Education’s policy to incorporate coding and robotics into the national curriculum,” she stated.

Yim highlighted the value of coding and robotics, explaining that it’s not just about using technology but also fostering creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. He encouraged teachers and students to embrace the new opportunities these kits would bring.

The principal of Laerskool Bergvlam, David Ndou, also expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting that this initiative would significantly enhance the learning experience for students. The impact of this donation is set to ripple through these communities, preparing the next generation for success in an increasingly tech-driven world.

This initiative builds on previous contributions from the Korean Embassy, which has donated millions of ICT resources to schools across South Africa. The partnership with the Adopt-a-School Foundation continues to make a profound difference in South Africa’s education system. –@NewsSA
