The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) says this week’s alleged rape incident at a police training academy in Pretoria is not only shocking, but also a serious betrayal of trust and an abuse of authority by someone who was supposed to protect and guide young recruits. The incident, which took place on Tuesday at the South African Police Service (SAPS) training academy in Tshwane, Gauteng province, has left the public outraged and concerned about the safety of trainees, especially women in training environments. The alleged perpetrator is a trainer, someone entrusted with teaching and mentoring new police officers.
Spokesperson for POPCRU Richard Mamabolo, strongly condemned the alleged rape of the female trainee and said the act goes against everything the SAPS is supposed to represent. “This incident is not just a criminal act, it is a disgrace to the values and principles that the SAPS should stand for, it is an insult to the idea of justice, protection and service,” Mamabolo said.
He confirmed that the accused trainer was arrested and removed from the facility shortly after the incident was reported. However, the union said this was not enough, saying it was deeply outraged and hurt by what happened and demanded that further steps be taken to ensure that such an incident never happens again. “Training institutions must be safe spaces, they are where young recruits who are the future of our police force should be learning discipline, ethics and professionalism. These academies should not be places where they are scared, violated, or taken advantage of,” added Mamabolo.
He said a thorough, independent investigation must be launched urgently and that no effort must be spared in uncovering the full truth. “There must be accountability at all levels, we cannot tolerate any attempt to cover up or delay justice. Action must be taken without delay to ensure justice for the survivor and to show that the SAPS is serious about protecting its members,” Mamabolo said.
He also stressed that the actions of one person should not be allowed to tarnish the reputation of the many good and dedicated trainers across South Africa. “There are thousands of SAPS trainers who continue to serve our country with honesty, commitment and integrity. We must not let one horrific act overshadow their hard work and sacrifice,” Mamabolo said.
He said the union is calling for several immediate steps to support the survivor and to prevent future incidents. These include providing trauma counselling and psychological support to the affected trainee through the SAPS Employee Health and Wellness Programme, improving the vetting and screening process for all staff members at police academies, increasing gender sensitivity and ethics training for all SAPS trainees and trainers, as well as making the results of the investigation public so that trust can be rebuilt.
“We need real transparency, the public and especially SAPS members need to see that this case will be handled properly, there should be no secrecy or hiding of facts, that is the only way we can start to rebuild trust in our institutions,” Mamabolo said.
POPCRU remains committed to building a professional, ethical and accountable police service that is free from abuse, harassment and corruption. It will continue to speak out against any injustice and ensure that all members, especially women, are protected in the workplace. “We stand fully with the survivor in this difficult time. No one deserves to go through such trauma, especially in a place where they are supposed to be preparing to serve and protect others,” Mamabolo said.
Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu condemned the incident and confirmed that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate was investigating the matter, and expressed satisfaction that swift action was taken to remove the suspect from the college.
The incident has sparked national outrage, with many civil society groups also calling for reform within SAPS training institutions. There are growing calls for a wider investigation into the culture and environment at training academies to ensure they are truly safe, respectful, and professional. As the investigation continues, many South Africans will be watching closely to see how SAPS handles the matter, whether it will take the necessary steps to prevent any further abuse of power in the future or embark on a cover-up. – @NewsSa_Online
