A dark cloud hung over the Free State after a tragic accident on the N8 Road claimed ten lives and left many families shattered. The crash happened about 32 kilometres east of Bloemfontein on Saturday morning when an Interstate heavy-motor bus travelling from Botshabelo A-Section collided with a truck.
Ten lives lost at the scene
In a statement to NewsSA, Interstate Bus Lines said emergency personnel arrived at a heartbreaking scene. Six passengers were in such critical condition that paramedics had to race against time to get them to Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein.
But for ten passengers, help came too late. They were declared dead at the scene, leaving behind unanswered questions, broken families and a community deeply wounded. Loved ones who expected their family members to return home tonight are now facing unbearable grief
What began as an ordinary morning for commuters quickly turned into a nightmare. Passengers who had boarded the bus hoping to reach work or other destinations in Bloemfontein suddenly found themselves fighting for their lives as the impact tore through the bus.
At least 19 passengers suffered minor injuries, shaken but grateful to be alive. Three others were rushed to Botshabelo Hospital with moderate injuries, while two were taken to Busamed Hospital for further treatment.

Interstate Bus Lines expresses sorrow
Interstate Bus Lines chairperson, George Mokgothu, expressed deep sorrow as the company and families grapple with the scale of the tragedy. “We are working closely with the emergency services and authorities as the situation continues to unfold. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this tragic event,” he said.
Investigation underway into the cause of the accident
Interstate Bus Lines also assured families that support services, including counselling and assistance, will be made available.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the accident, hoping to bring clarity to what led to this devastating collision.
As the province mourns, social media has been flooded with messages of sympathy and prayers for the victims, survivors and their families. The road, now cleared, carries the heavy silence of a community left in shock.
