QWAQWA, FREE STATE – Bokang Vincent Mokubung, a student from Bluegumbosch Secondary School, has been named the best learner in South Africa for Mathematics among Quintile 3 schools. He says his success comes from hard work, help from his teachers, and never making excuses for failing.
The road to the top was not easy
Mokubung says his journey to becoming a top student was very long and difficult. He believes he reached this goal because he worked hard, stayed dedicated, and had passion for his schoolwork.
He also proudly said his teacher played a big role in keeping him on track in his studies. “The thing that made me have that discipline is my teacher, who always reminded me of the goal that is in front of me,” Mokubung said. He gave a special thanks to his teacher, Mr Thabo Ernest Moroane, for helping and encouraging him to focus on his books.
A teacher’s proud moment as his student tops
Moroane, a Mathematics teacher, has been helping Mokubung since Grade 9. He said he identified something special in the young man four years ago and always tried to remind him of what he was capable of achieving. “I knew that this boy was very special,” said Moroane. He is very proud of Mokubung and hopes other students will follow his example by listening to their teachers and working hard.
Dealing with challenges and multi-tasking
Even though he is a top student, Mokubung’s last year of school was not easy. On weekends, he attended a special program for Math and Science; at the same time, he had to study his other subjects, like Geography and Life Sciences, all by himself, to catch up. “I had to catch up on Life Sciences and Geography on my own,” Mokubung explained.
Advice to the next matriculants
Mokubung has a simple message for students who will be in matric in 2026: “Never have excuses for any failure, because failure doesn’t have to be justified”. Moroane also advised students to spend more time with their books and to be “present learners” if they want to do well. Mokubung is now ready to move to the University of Pretoria to study Actuarial Science to prepare for his future career. – @NewsSA_Online
