In the heart of Soweto, where dreams are often tested before they are realised, a young boy named Kenny Sthembiso Dliwayo dared to believe he was built for more. Today, South Africa knows him as SPRKZ – a name that doesn’t just spark, but ignites.
Pronounced “Sparks,” SPRKZ is more than a stage name. It is a statement. A brand. A relentless force of creativity forged through discipline, ambition, and an unshakable hunger to succeed.
His story doesn’t begin in flashing lights or roaring crowds. It begins in the corridors of high school, where he once struggled academically – a self-described “debtor” of his own potential. But where others saw limitations, he discovered rhythm. Movement. Expression. Dance became his language, and the stage, his battlefield.
And once he stepped onto it, he never looked back. Before the fame, before the cameras, there was New York City – a defining moment. As part of the South African Model United Nations (SAMUN), SPRKZ represented his country on an international stage, returning home with a remarkable second-place finish. Even then, the pattern was clear: wherever he went, excellence followed.
But it was in 2008 that the fire truly found its fuel. Joining the award-winning Soweto dance crew, The Reptilez, SPRKZ became part of a cultural movement. Not just dancers, but pioneers. Together, they dominated stages, opened for global superstars, and took South African street dance to the world. From performing alongside acts like Drake, Usher, and Kanye West, to winning competitions like Masters of Rhythm and Red Bull Beat Battle, the crew carved their names into the DNA of local hip hop culture – and SPRKZ stood right at the centre of it all.
This was not luck. This was work. Relentless. Consistent. Uncompromising. Yet even as the world applauded his moves, SPRKZ was already evolving. Reinventing. Expanding. By 2012, he had stepped beyond the dance floor and into broadcasting – a transition many fear, but he embraced. Starting at Soweto TV, he didn’t just present; he learned the craft behind the scenes. Editing. Producing. Building. Shows like Kasi Vibes, Ziyamporoma, and Zer011 became his training ground, sharpening him into a complete media force.
Then came the breakthrough. In 2018, SPRKZ arrived on SABC 1 – not as a hopeful, but as a product of years of grind. From Mi Jasi Su Kasi to Live AMP, from red carpets at the SAMAs to the iconic Selimathunzi, he wasn’t just hosting – he was owning every moment.
By 2019, the industry could no longer ignore him. A Best Youth Programme win. A nomination for Best TV Presenter. Recognition that spoke not just to talent, but to impact.
But behind the accolades is a man who remains grounded. Humble. Hungry. Focused.A charmer, yes. But also a worker. SPRKZ is not a finished product – and he doesn’t pretend to be. He calls himself “a work in progress,” a rare admission in an industry obsessed with perfection. Yet perhaps that is his greatest strength: the refusal to settle.
