For many children, poor eyesight and untreated dental problems are silent barriers that rob them of confidence, concentration and the chance to reach their full potential. The Black Coffee Foundation is determined to change that.
In a bold expansion of its life-changing Gift of Sight by Black Coffee initiative, the Foundation has introduced a dedicated dental care programme, ensuring that vulnerable learners receive not only eye care but also essential oral health services.
The programme made its debut at Zenzeleni Primary School in Alexandra from 27 to 29 July 2026, where learners underwent comprehensive eye examinations, vision testing and oral health assessments. The initiative reflects the Foundation’s growing commitment to tackling the hidden health challenges that often stand between children and a quality education.
Having already transformed the lives of thousands of learners through free eye testing, the Foundation is now taking an even more holistic approach by addressing another critical but often overlooked aspect of children’s health.
The programme is delivered in partnership with Lepas, the Foundation’s official mobility partner, and supported by long-standing collaborators including Tania Noach Optometrists, the South African Optometric Association (SAOA), Love Maison33 and JHB VIP, all of whom continue to play a vital role in bringing quality eye care to children.
The expansion also welcomes three new partners. Fourways Dental Studio will spearhead dental screenings and follow-up treatment where necessary, while Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital will strengthen ongoing eye-testing services. Diamonds Do Good has also joined the initiative through a significant investment that will help extend the Foundation’s reach.
“We’ve seen first-hand how access to eye care can transform a child’s life,” said Lungie Maphumulo, CEO of the Black Coffee Foundation.
“By introducing dental care, we’re ensuring that even more children have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive without preventable health challenges standing in their way. This is about creating healthier futures for our children.”
The Foundation believes that healthy learners become confident learners. By identifying vision and oral health problems early, children are better equipped to succeed academically while enjoying improved overall wellbeing.
The visit to Zenzeleni Primary School marks another milestone in the Foundation’s mission to deliver sustainable, community-driven programmes that leave a lasting impact on children, families and communities across South Africa. For the Black Coffee Foundation, this is about far more than restoring sight or treating teeth.
