Johannesburg turned into one giant packet of Cheetos this week, and no, I’m not complaining. If orange had a passport, it definitely stamped its way into every outfit at the Cheetos Playground, where the snack giant officially announced its partnership with Varsity Football.
Your girl Zee was there, and trust me, the guest list understood the assignment… well, most of them.
Let’s start with the obvious.
Orange was the dress code, but some celebrities interpreted it like a university group assignment. You know the type – one person spends weeks preparing while another remembers five minutes before the presentation. Some looked like they had stylists working overtime, while others looked like they lost a fight with a traffic cone.
Still, points for participation.
Host Siyamthanda Jwacu kept the energy high, while the newly crowned “Cheetos Playmakers” sold the dream of making varsity sport fun again. Judging from the crowd, they may actually pull it off.
Then came the music.
DJ duo Ponahalo Majepelo and Nkuley Masemola understood exactly what the assignment was. LesediTheDJ had people forgetting they were technically at a brand launch and not a Friday night groove. DJ Oara? Let’s just say nobody was checking their watches.
Fashion, however, was the real competition.

Zamani Mbatha arrived looking like he accidentally wandered off a luxury fashion campaign. Libho Geza continues to remind everyone that reality TV stars now have better wardrobes than half the industry. Chelsea Netshiomvani and the content-creator squad came dressed as if Instagram itself had sponsored them.
Smokey Mirror? As unpredictable as ever – which, frankly, is the brand at this point.
And then there was Phil Mphela, the X kingpin himself, who made a fashionably late entrance and walked in with the energy of a podcast celebrity who had already finished recording three hot takes before arriving. The side-eye survey of the room was immaculate. Whether he was judging outfits, scouting headlines or simply protecting the brand, we’ll never know.
Of course, every event has that one guest who spends more time posing for photographers than actually enjoying the party. If confidence burned calories, some people would’ve left several kilograms lighter.
And can we talk about the networking?
South African celebrities have mastered the art of pretending they’ve been best friends forever the moment the cameras appear. Off-camera? Suddenly everyone remembers they have an urgent phone call.
Classic.
One thing I loved was that this wasn’t another stiff corporate launch where executives read speeches while guests secretly Google the nearest exit. The Cheetos Playground actually felt… playful. Imagine that.
Brand manager Thato Tloubatla spoke about celebrating superfans, while Varsity Sports’ Lisa Roux made it clear that university sport isn’t just about the action on the field anymore – it’s about the culture surrounding it.
They’re not wrong.
Varsity sport has quietly become one of the coolest places to spot tomorrow’s stars before they become household names. Today’s student influencer is tomorrow’s television presenter, musician or Springbok.
Speaking of students, Zee has a humble request for next time: if it’s a student-focused event, invite more varsity students. We love the celebrities, but Zee also wants to see the fresh faces, future stars and campus personalities who actually live the varsity experience every day.

Now, before I forget…
Where was Nambitha Mpulwana? My buddy bag? My event bestie? Some of us spent the evening looking around, expecting a dramatic entrance that never came. We need answers.
As for the food…
Listen, if you’re going to host a Cheetos event, commitment to the theme is important. But the kitchen took that commitment very seriously. There were Cheetos everywhere. On snacks. On garnishes. On dishes. At one point, even the pasta arrived looking like it had signed a long-term endorsement deal with Cheetos.
Surprisingly? It worked.
I can’t even complain because the flavour combination was actually enjoyable. Consider me converted.
Overall?
The vibe was high. The music delivered. The partnership makes sense. The fashion gave us plenty to discuss. The food was unapologetically orange. And yes… someone definitely wore sunglasses indoors all night. We’re still investigating whether it was for fashion, mystery or because the future looked too bright.
Until next time…
Keep your outfit louder than your excuses, your selfies in focus, and remember: just because there’s a dress code doesn’t mean you have to attack the colour wheel. – @NewsSA_Online
